Why More Companies Are Shifting to On-Site Drug & Alcohol Testing

August 07th, 2017 On-Site Testing

Companies Have Discovered On-Site Testing Saves Them Time And Money

Let’s look at different scenarios and see how on-site testing compares with having your employee (and supervisor) sent to a clinic for testing.

Post-Accident and Reasonable Suspicion Testing

On-Site

  • Employees who have been in an accident or thought to be under the influence are removed from duty and wait at the site with their employer/supervisor until the collector arrives.
  • The supervisor remains at work while the employee sits with the collector, if any subsequent waiting is necessary.

Clinic

  • You need to send the employee and supervisor to the testing center, and that whole process can take several hours. (Not having a supervisor to accompany the employee can put the employer at unnecessary risk, given the circumstances.)
  • You may pay cab fare. It’s not advisable to have employees drive themselves after an accident has occurred, or if someone is suspected of being under the influence. By doing so, you open your company to liability. Personal safety may also be compromised when transporting an employee who is suspected of being under the influence.
  • If the employee cannot produce a specimen upon arrival, the employee has up to three hours to produce a viable specimen. The employee and supervisor will wait (while being paid) during this time.

Pre-Employment Testing

On-Site

  • The mobile collector can be available right after employees finish their new-hire packets.
  • Lack of money or reliable transportation are not factors for new hires with onsite testing.
  • There is also no opportunity for someone to make a stop to get adulterants or fake urine.

Clinic

  • This test is similar to the random-testing process. The prospective employee completes the new-hire packet and is asked to report to a clinic for pre-employment testing.
  • Employers report that some prospective employees have a difficult time getting to a clinic because money is an issue, or they don’t yet have reliable transportation.

Return-to-Duty Testing

On-Site

  • The employer coordinates with Timely Testing to schedule onsite testing immediately before an employee returns to work after violating the company’s workplace drug & alcohol policy or after testing positive for illicit drugs or alcohol.
  • A Timely Testing collector efficiently completes the test without disruption to the supervisor.
  • The employee quickly resumes his or her role in the company.

Clinic

  • Employee reports to the clinic for testing, often with no limits on the time frame.
  • Employee has ample opportunity to cheat because no supervision occurs until the employee begins the testing process.

Follow-Up Testing

On-Site

  • The employer determines (often with employee’s substance abuse professional) the time, frequency, and duration of an employee’s follow-up testing once the employee’s return-to-duty test is negative.
  • Timely Testing tracks the scheduled events and ensures a technician is on-site and ready to go for each testing.
  • The employer is not interrupted for the testing, and is provided the completed Custody and Control forms immediately upon test completion.

Clinic

  • This test resembles random testing in that the employer notifies the employee who then reports to the clinic for testing.
  • Employee is given a specific amount of time to report for testing once the notification is given.
  • Wait time, traffic delays, and opportunities to obtain adulterants are all factors when an employee is sent offsite for testing.

We all know that drug testing is necessary but often not pleasant. Timely Testing guarantees to make the process as quick and stress-free as possible: Our professional and friendly collectors come to you, and are trained to make the whole activity “no big deal” for your employees and for your bottom line.
